Portrait of a Puma
Puma - Torres del Paine National Park, Chile (2017)
Mountain lion kittens are born with spots across their body which fade as they mature. Although this cat is nearly indistinguishable from it’s mother in regards to size, the fading spots on its head reveal it is indeed a juvenile. We had been watching this young puma along with it’s mother and sibling from a distance, patiently waiting for them to return to the remains of a guananco they had brought down earlier. After several hours of napping, they began to make their over to the guanaco. As we watched, I knew the general direction they were moving and pointed my camera hoping to catch a glimpse, when suddenly the this juvenile appeared in front of me. The moment happened so quickly that I barely had time to fire off an image before the massive cat disappeared into the tall grass. I was certain my focus was going to be off with all the tall grass obstructing my line of sight, so I was absolutely thrilled to find I had lucky been able to focus on the cat. This was one of the most incredible moments I’ve ever experienced; to be face to face with such an extraordinarily beautiful animal that I never believed I would encounter in the wild.
