Otterly Adorable
Sea otter - Seward, Alaska (2018)
Hunted extensively for their prized fur into the 20th century, these adorable sea otters were pushed to the brink of extinction. The estimated worldwide population had plummeted to 1,000-2,000 animals, less than 1% of their pre-fur trade estimated population. Then in 1911, an international treaty was signed protecting sea otters from harvesting, and leading to the recovery of these incredible animals. Although still endangered, this remains an amazing testament to the effectiveness of conservation and resilience of nature when afforded the opportunity to recover.
