Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
The jewel of Yellowstone National Park, Grand Prismatic Spring is the third largest hot spring in the world, and certainly the most colorful. The nearly 200 degree (Fahrenheit) geothermally heated water rises from the depths of the spring, 160 feet down, and cools as it moves across the surface. It's this depth and clarity that creates the emerald and turquoise blue in the middle of the spring. The hot water provides the perfect habitat for bacteria which form mats around the perimeter of the hot spring. It's the pigment in these bacteria that give the spring its red, orange, and yellow colors.
