Snow geese - Skagit Valley, Washington (2011)
Often gathering in flocks of several thousand, these snow geese migrate nearly 5,000 kilometers south from Wrangle Island in Russia to spend winter along Puget Sound. The relatively mild temperature here allows the snow geese to feed on vegetation and grain found in farm fields throughout the winter. However, such large numbers do not go unnoticed. Several bald eagles lurk in nearby trees waiting for an opportune moment. Suddenly an eagle soars overhead. In an instant the flock erupts and a cacophony of a thousand beating wings fills the air like the roar of countless sheets fluttering in the wind. This mass exodus confuses and overwhelms the predator, making it too difficult for the eagle to single out an individual goose. Eventually the eagle flies off and the geese once again settle down in the field and continue to feed.
