Pink salmon - Resurrection Creek, Chugach National Forest, Alaska (2018)
These pink salmon return to their natal stream after two years to complete their incredible life cycle. Upon entering the river, they stop eating, and focus on their final act. With every ounce of energy earned at sea, they fight their way upstream to spawn until their bodies break down and they eventually die. The ocean nutrients locked in their bodies will then nourish other animals and the surrounding forest as they are consumed and decompose.
