Sea of Sand and Sky
White Sands National Monument, New Mexico (2017)
Comprised entirely of pure white gypsum sands, walking through the vast dune field of White Sands National Monument is a surreal experience. Gypsum, a soft, water soluble mineral, rarely occurs as sand, normally being dissolved in water and carried out to sea by rivers. However, the geography surrounding White Sands National Monument does not provide an outlet to the ocean, trapping rain water containing dissolved gypsum from the nearby San Andres and Sacramento Mountains in the Telarosa Basin. Over time, evaporation forms selenite crystals composed of gypsum which weathering and erosion in turn break down into sand. Prevailing southwest winds carry the sand, eventually forming the largest gypsum sand dune field on the planet.
Like a fresh snowfall, on this morning we woke to a strong wind which had completely erased all footsteps left in the dunes from the previous days. The blowing gypsum sand created a dreamlike atmosphere as clouds that appeared to mirror the waves of sand passed overhead.
