The Wave - North Coyote Buttes, Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Arizona (2017)
On the northern edge of Arizona, within Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, water and wind have exposed cross-bedding in the Navajo Sandstone which comprises “The Wave”, one of the southwest’s most impressive rock formations. Though not very large compared to other southwest formations, it’s not the scale of the sandstone structure that draws travelers from around the world, but rather the indescribable beauty of its undulating curves of colorful erosion-exposed striae. The texture, lines and contours of the vibrant sandstone create a visual wonderland. I spent the entire day, through waxing and waning autumn light, exploring the abundance of abstract and surreal compositions The Wave provides. Here, as the daylight ebbs, light reflecting off the sandstone walls reveals a rich palette of red and orange hues.
